EPOXY FAQ
1 –What is epoxy?
For starters, epoxy is not paint. Paint is a latex acrylic product, which may sometimes have some small amounts of epoxy added to it for durability. Epoxy is an actual thermosetting resin that is applied as a coating. It is formed when you mix one part epoxide resin with one part polyamine hardener. The hardener acts as a catalyst and is what gives epoxy its strength. The end result is a coating that is much thicker than paint and bonds a lot stronger to a properly prepared surface. Epoxy can be applied from 3 to 10 mil thick.
2 – What are some of the advantages of an epoxy floor?
The main advantage is the durability of epoxy floors which makes it a great choice for areas with heavy equipment and heavy usage such as airplane hangars, parking decks, garages, manufacturing, schools, etc. they are also resistant to chemicals, UV, and temperature extremes.Although the UV inhibitors will eventually yellow when exposed to sunlight.
3 – What is polyurethane floor coating?
Like epoxy, polyurethane is a thermosetting polymer as well and is considered a high performance coating. Polyurethane coating is only about 2 to 3 mils in thickness and can’t be adjusted as with epoxy.
4 – What are some of the advantages/disadvantages of a polyurethane floor coating?
Although thinner,Polyurethane has more flexibility than epoxy and it is the flexibility that aids in absorbing impacts better. Some say that the wear resistance of polyurethane over epoxy is almost 3 to 1. The resistance to chemicals is better than epoxy as well. Also polyurethane is UV stable and won’t yellow when exposed to sunlight. The surface of polyurethane is not as hard as epoxy but it is much more scratch resistant, can tolerate larger temperature extremes. Though polyurethane has many advantages over epoxy, it does not bond well to concrete and its thin dry film thickness will not work well to level small cracks in flooring.
5 – Which one is recommended by epoxy flooring pros?
We recommend a combination of both epoxy and polyurethane. We first put epoxy for the thickness and filling of gaps and then coat it with polyurethane for protection of wear, scratches and yellowing.
6 – What is metallic epoxy?
Metallic epoxy floor coatings are a trendy look that is high glossy and deep. It can be done in many colors and designs and can provide a three dimensional look as well. It consists of 100% epoxy with a metallic pigment added.
